Before You Notarize: A Simple Checklist
A few minutes of preparation makes your appointment fast and smooth. Here is what to have ready — and what a notary can and cannot do.
Your before-you-notarize checklist
Have the right document
Bring the complete, unsigned document. A notary does not choose documents or draft language — if you are unsure, consider asking an attorney or the receiving party.
Don’t sign ahead of time
For most acts you sign in front of the notary. Leave signature and date lines blank until your appointment.
Bring valid photo ID
A current, government-issued photo ID is required. For online notarization you’ll also complete a quick identity check.
Confirm what the receiving party accepts
Check with the court, agency, lender, or institution about whether they accept online notarization and any specific wording.
Know what can’t be done online
In Texas, wills, codicils, and testamentary trusts must be signed in person. Ask Robin if you’re not sure your document qualifies.
Have your devices ready (online)
For online notarization you’ll need a camera-equipped device, a stable connection, and your document as a PDF.
If you don’t have the document yet
If you still need to locate the document itself, online template libraries may be a helpful starting point to review with an attorney or the receiving party. NotaryAve does not draft documents or provide legal advice.
